I’ve been obsessed with tracking down the recipe for a friend-of-a-friend’s turkey cheese dip ever since I first tried it when I was 12 at a holiday party. It was just the right combination of gooey, melty cheese, crusty sourdough (it was served in a bread bowl, after all) and fresh, white meat turkey. My family had lost touch with the neighbor who first made it, and after tearing apart our house, the recipe itself seemed to have vanished with her, so this year, I set out to create my own recipe.

Here’s what I came up with, which tastes remarkably like the original. You could try different kinds of bread, like pumpernickel, or even use rotisserie chicken instead of turkey. (If you’re into turkey but don’t have say, Thanksgiving leftovers or a roasted bird lying around, try picking up a pack of “carver-style” turkey from the packaged meats area of the grocery store, near the deli.)
