In the past decade, Nashville has undergone a radical shift. When a new restaurant opens up, it’s not a barbecue joint or cheap Tex-Mex—it’s probably destined for a write-up in The New York Times. East Nashville, a neighborhood once known for an ice cream truck that drove around at midnight (spoiler: it was not selling desserts), is now lauded as a national cultural destination. It’s been rewarding and a little bizarre to see Nashville’s star rise so rapidly, but it’s definitely easier to impress out-of-towners with our big city–style amenities— coupled with downhome charm, of course. If you decide to take a jaunt down to Music City, here are just a few of the highlights.

Pharmacy Burger

Everything on the menu is a prescription for what ails you. Tennessee-raised beef burgers are served on outstanding homemade buns, along with a large portion of fries or tater tots, and they make their sausage, soda, and condiments in-house. The menu overflows with beer selections and milkshakes good enough to forget your troubles. Ask to be seated outdoors to enjoy the scenic outdoor patio and beer garden.

Barista Parlor

Possibly the only thing that Nashville hipsters unironically adore, Barista Parlor is Music City’s premier coffee house that lives up to its reputation: They serve a damn good cup of joe. Everything from the mural on the wall to the aprons are locally made, and they consistently debut new pastries and other breakfast goodies. The service has gotten friendlier as BP’s star has risen, so don’t worry if you’ve left your skinny jeans and scarf at home. Another location, the Golden Sound, is open in the Gulch, with a third location planned for Germantown.

 FUN:

Ryman Auditorium

This intimate venue, a former home of the Grand Ole Opry, is a must-visit. Buy tickets as soon as you know you’re coming; their shows sell out quickly. In the past couple of years, I’ve seen Stephen King’s play Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, Weezer play the Blue Album in its entirety, and Pentatonix turn off their mics and take advantage of the building’s superior acoustics to sing acapella. It’s an experience not to be missed.

Pinewood Social

A versatile meeting place for any occasion, hip downtown locale Pinewood offers food, drink, and entertainment for early birds, night owls, and everyone in between. Fuel your caffeine addiction at the coffee bar, sample delicious Americana food (Catbird Seat alum Josh Habiger drives Pinewood’s six menus), go bowling or play pool with friends, laze out on the outdoor deck and pool area when it’s warm, and finish off your evening with a drink or three from the exhaustive menu at Pinewood’s full bar.

FULFILLMENT:

Jack Daniels Distillery

Just an hour outside of Nashville in Lynchburg is the Jack Daniels Distillery. Visitors can choose a free or a $10 tasting tour of the facility, which is consistently lauded for being impeccably maintained and for its knowledgeable, entertaining tour guides. Fun fact: The distillery is located in a dry county, so you’ll just be charged for the bottle—the liquor is free.

The Bluebird Cafe

If you’re a fan of the TV show Nashville, you’ll be delighted to discover that the Bluebird is a real place that features an amazing wealth of talent, albeit with less drama than its onscreen portrayal. The Bluebird hosts two shows per evening, and surprise celebrity guests are hot gossip the next day. Book online if you can (their rules vary according to what time and which night you go), but don’t be discouraged by a long line out the door: Table turnover is high.
