Sometimes you just need an impromptu dance party. NEED one. You just have to shake off the craziness of the day — or maybe add an exclamation point to the end of an already incredible one.

In the midst of one such shut-up-and-dance moment, I found myself mesmerized by early 2000s music videos. The songs are just so easy to dance to — and get completely cheesy while lip-syncing. Or real-singing.

After a few songs, though, I realized there were a few common threads throughout most of the jams — and they had nothing to do with the lyrics. Like, for example…

1. Group dance moves that’d put a synchronized swim team to shame

2. Everyone wears denim jackets

3. Frosted tips or Kool-Aid-esque, dip-dyed ends in bright pink or red

4. A slow-motion walk off camera at the end

5. & 6. Midriffs — and ultra low-rise flare jeans

7. A Lil’ Jon cameo (“What?!” “Okaaay!”)

8. Excessive use of CGI backdrops

9. Color-coordinated outfits

10. Wind machines

11. Liberal use of rhinestones…everywhere
