You can call it a Hallmark holiday, ignore it, prefer to celebrate Galentine’s Day instead—but, whatever you do, take a moment to fill out one of St. Jude’s Valentine’s Day cards this year. It’s so worth it. The research hospital famous for caring for children with cancer, brain tumors, blood disorders and other diseases—without charging their families a dime—has launched a special campaign where you can send a free virtual Valentine’s Day card to a patient, providing hope and a bit of joy this holiday.

You don’t have to know a patient, or even know what to say—St. Jude sends the cards to patients, and the service even offers several pre-written messages, if you’re at a loss or need inspiration.

How to Send a Valentine’s Day Card to St. Jude Patients for Free:

To take part, simply click this link and follow the “create card” prompts. There are several card options, all inspired by patients’ artwork, and from there, it’s as simple as writing a message (or choosing one), signing your name and clicking send.

If you want to take things a step further, you can also donate to St. Jude to help fund their research and services. It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture; even a couple dollars can make an impact.

The first time I donated, I was embarrassed to admit I only sent $9.18—the amount I was going to spend on Valentine’s Day truffles. It wasn’t an impressive number, nor a huge sacrifice. But then I realized: It doesn’t have to be. It can just be a small act, committed with love, followed by another, and another, over time.
