Gourmet cookie dealers are the new cupcakeries, with bougier takes on the trend popping up every day. And, arguably, the most exclusive of the bunch these days is Last Crumb. The Los Angeles-based brand is known for its weekly “drops,” just like those in the fashion world, where the company offers a limited supply of sweets—and you have to act fast to get your hands on ’em. They typically sell out within hours of release, despite their eye-popping price tag ($140 to $160 per dozen).

Last week, the company dropped gluten-free cookies in four flavors: I Lava You, Grandma’s Last Stand, Thicc Boy and Birthday Boohoo. And—spoiler alert—they’re shockingly good. But could ANY cookie be worth that price tag?! Here’s a breakdown of each flavor, along with what you should know before ordering.

What Makes These Last Crumb Gluten-Free Cookies So Special?

They’re the first softball-sized cookies to successfully go gluten-free, and really, that comes down to their recipes and the quality of their ingredients. They have the chewy-meets-gooey texture that’s made the luxe cookie trend take off, thanks to their use of Original Sunshine flour. It’s a wheat-based flour that meets FDA requirements for being gluten-free (meaning it has less than 20 parts per million—or ppm—gluten in the final product).

How Do the New Last Crumb Gluten-Free Flavors Taste?

You can check out my full review on PureWow, but essentially:

  • I Lava You = A crinkle cookie with a molten ganache core; for true chocoholics
  • Birthday Boohoo = A chewy-on-the-outside, gooey-inside cake batter base of a cookie, with icing bits that are basically like softer white chocolate chunks
  • Thicc Boy = Ultra moist, soft peanut butter cookie studded with peanut butter cups and peanut butter chips (for serious PB fans; the flavor is great, though dark chocolate would’ve made it less one-note and richer flavor overall)
  • Grandma’s Last Stand = Arguably, the best balance of flavors and textures (rich chocolate chunks, a caramelized cookie base, a little flaky sea salt to round things out) but it dries out the fastest. Microwave it for 5 to 10 seconds before tasting for the optimum flavor.

How Long Do the Cookies Last?

Last Crumb says they’ll last up to two weeks. They’re individually sealed, so they retain their freshness.

Are They Worth It?

When you break it down, you’re paying $13 per cookie for a gluten-free dozen. It’s clear from the first bite that they’re serving top-notch ingredients, and the luxe packaging and shipping can’t be cheap, either. They’re also large and decadent enough that you basically have to share them.

So, for a very special occasion—a birthday, an anniversary, a party to celebrate being cancer-free—I can see dropping this kind of money for something so unique (and delicious).
