More than a decade ago, lines snaked around blocks for Dominique Ansel’s Cronut, the croissant-donut hybrid that inspired a hundred variations. Since then, there have been cruffins, croiffles—even crossushi (sushi stuffed into a croissant, naturally), but in nine years of covering food trends, I haven’t seen as much hype as the crookie, a croissant-cookie combo most notably attributed to Stéphane Louvard’s Le Crookie in Paris.

Thankfully, though, you don’t have to fly to France to taste the buttery, flaky, cookie dough-cored treat. Chip City in New York has created its own mashup, known as the Chip Crookie, and while it’s only available at select stores from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or whenever they sell out), trust when I say it’s worth planning a trip. Here’s everything you need to know.

What Does the Crookie Taste Like?

Imagine a fresh, flaky chocolate croissant—stuffed with warm cookie dough. That’s essentially what you’re getting here. I worried the Chip Crookie’s croissant would be crunchy or stale tasting—it seemed all too easy to overbake—but thankfully, this was light and buttery, retaining its signature layers despite the dense cookie in the center. The cookie portion was almost dough-like; it was soft and gooey, reminding me of Tijuana Flats’s cookie dough flautas when warm. It’s sweet, but thanks to the outer croissant portion, it’s never overpowering. It actually balances out the supersized cookie nicely.

How Much Is a Chip City Crookie?

Each crookie costs $6. While it’s pricier than the typical Chip City cookie, it’s in line with the overall softball-sized cookie trend—and it’s even bigger than those. You can easily share it with one to two other people, so I try to justify it in my mind that it’s $2 to $3 per serving. (But then again, I can justify just about anything in the name of dessert.)

Where Can You Get a Crookie in the U.S.?

As of March 24, 2024, the Bayside, Forest Hills, Upper West Side, Garden City, Rockefeller Center, Astoria (30th Ave) and North Babylon Chip City locations are all serving fresh crookies from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. So sadly, if you’re visiting a shop outside of New York, you may be out of luck—for now. Keep tabs on the Chip City Instagram page; it’s likely to have the latest location news.

The Verdict: Is It Worth It?

Admittedly, I rolled my eyes at this trend initially, but after tasting it, I see the appeal. It’s decadent for sure, but the buttery, less-sweet notes of the croissant balance out the hearty, rich chocolate of the cookie dough.

Chip City offers the Chip Crookie with multiple cookie flavors, and after trying one filled with a chocolate cookie and a classic chocolate chip, I vote trying the chocolate cookie. It’s like a chocolate croissant taken to its molten-chocolate-cookie-dough apex, and—dare I say it?—feels like an improvement on the classic French dessert.

I said what I said!
